The topic is touchy and I certainly do want to keep my job at Hendrick Toyota Merriam, but today I decided to write about what it's like to work in the male-dominated auto industry. There are several motivating factors pushing me towards writing this: 1. I want to encourage more women to work in car sales (preferably at my dealership!) 2. I want to reach out to leery female car buyers* 3. I want to sell more cars.
*Of course, I want to help everyone find the right vehicle, but I especially want to get the word out to women (especially those who buy alone) so that their experience can be one that is stress-free and comfortable. I know how I feel when I walk into a place and am confronted by a group of men: UNCOMFORTABLE!
During my first week at the dealership I almost walked out of the job. I walked into a room full of 35+ men and one woman: me. The word, intimidating, doesn't even begin to describe my emotions. ABJECT FEAR comes closer. But I stuck it out, figured out a way to cope and realize now that selling cars is a very individualistic career. I am responsible for finding customers, retaining them, helping them find the right vehicle and closing the deals. I determine how much I make each month and there's no glass ceiling as far as sales go.
But it's true, dealership culture is in need of some improvement. But for now all I will say is that I feel an immense sense of joy and satisfaction when I get the opportunity to create a happy and comfortable car-buying experience for a leery female buyer.
After some recent positive feedback from a customer:
"Leah, I am so happy I bought my car from you! You were so much fun! I appreciate all you did to make me happy - $200 discount, car mats! I love your blog! You are a very fascinating person! The photography is phenomenal! Take care!"

I realize that I need to find creative ways to reach people who are seeking a car-buying experience that is defined by comfort, ease, satisfaction, fun and low-pressure. If you know someone who is seeking this type of experience, send them my way.
Also, if you've bought a car from me already, thank you! I appreciate your business! Let all your friends know, too!
