You know how some friends have a soothing effect on your nerves? Steve has that effect on me. A lot of other people feel the same way. Also, Steve Sutton has taught me that it is okay to make a video about rearranging your sock drawer. Steve Sutton doesn’t really care what you or I think about his life. He has been hurt by malicious comments on YouTube in the past, but he doesn’t care to change his basic self to fit societal norms. And he continues to make videos on YouTube. That is why I love his videos. He’s one of the most authentic voices on the internet.
Like Steve, I am an introvert. You may not be able to tell this about me, but my core personality is secretive, sensitive and shy. American culture has forced me to be extroverted, but left to my own devices, I would be happy to just be at home, experimenting, writing, making photos and helping people. However, I do need to socialize, seek advice, help others and bounce ideas off people, but I get my ideas from inside myself. I’m happy to be left alone because I feel this great pressure to record all the activity that is occurring inside my brain. Recently, I’ve had a stream of wildly imaginative ideas and I have to race to record them. Not all my ideas are good. I cannot tell which ones are good until I capture, document and then get a response from others.
Introverted people are fun to watch on video. I seek out awkward moments both in real life and in videos. I enjoy seeing real people who have not been chosen by a Reality TV show director. Real people teach me lessons about how to be more authentic and to accept myself as I am. I still have trouble expressing the “real me” in my videos because I don’t like feeling vulnerable. But I’m starting to care less and less about how I am being perceived by our culture. Steve Sutton’s videos help me be myself in my own YouTube videos.
I’d like to see more introverts make YouTube videos. If you’re an introvert, make a video. And when you do, please send me a link. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
